Common struggles

Intergenerational encounters.

It was common during the interview to confront a heavily oppositional generational tone. Technology and social situations were framed by the participants as very different from the current situation. Sometimes this could be accompanied by a certain nostalgic feeling towards the past.

Usually, this feeling faded away the more we knew each other. Struggles from the London of the 20th century were around housing, unemployment, racism or homophobia, topics still very relevant for younger generations in 2022. The relatedness to many experiences narrated by the participants often resulted in moments of generational encounter. The nostalgic speech usually faded out as interviews went on. Interestingly this process didn’t happen at all when the communication was mainly through text messages, something that speaks in favour of nonverbal communication and personal engagement in ethnography.
